Strategies for Success: Building an Elementary Music Program

Jane designed and wrote Strategies for Success to be a resource for all music teachers—students, novices, and veterans. Her goal was to provide some basic strategies and ideas that could be applied to everyday teaching and tools to help educators plan and maintain a music program throughout the school year. Topics include developing lessons, preparing for concerts, classroom management, and distributing instruments.
Jane has taught kindergarten through fifth grade general music and band for 16 years in the Kyrene School District in Tempe, Arizona. She has served as president of the Arizona chapter of the American Orff-Schulwerk Association and has presented workshops for state conferences, school districts, and colleges. She has also served as a mentor teacher since 1998.
Songs of the Sunflower Room

Over a period of several months, an ethnically diverse first grade class at Belle Sherman Elementary School in Ithaca, New York, learned and practiced a variety of ethnic songs that visiting family members taught them. In May 2011, the students visited Ithaca College’s Hockett Family Recital Hall to record Songs of the Sunflower Room. The resulting CD explores and celebrates music from the many cultures represented in that classroom. Brian recorded and produced the CD.
The manager of music recording technical support at the IC’s School of Music, Brian has more than 14 years of experience in the music recording industry. His past roles have included engineer, producer, studio manager, and technician. He has collaborated with world-class artists, producers, and engineers on Grammy-winning projects.
One for the Road: Stories for Teenagers Whose Families Suffer from the Disease of Alcoholism

Fifteen alumni, professors, and students from Ithaca College contributed to One for the Road. The book is a collection of 64 poems and stories that are intended to help young adults who are dealing with alcoholism in their own families. Those involved with the book say it was created to start a conversation about abuse and to remind victims that they are not alone. Katharyn has emphasized that the book is not only about connecting with other people’s stories. It is also about realizing that writing and reading about addiction can be a way to move on.
Katharyn is a professor of writing and the author of 30 published collections of poetry from a variety of presses. Her poems have appeared in numerous magazines, anthologies, and textbooks. In 2002 she was named Tompkins County’s first poet laureate. Andre is working to become a certified alcohol and substance abuse counselor in New York State. His poems have appeared in several magazines and journals.
Facebook Advertising for Dummies

Richard and Paul’s newest collaboration offers ideas and techniques for advertising on Facebook. In keeping with the “dummies” series, the two have created an easy-to-follow guide for individuals and businesses who would like to reach customers using the popular social networking site. The two veteran marketers cover the basics—the key components of an effective Facebook ad, how to apply the latest strategies and tactics for successful advertising campaigns, and the tools needed to help the reader know if their ad is getting the desired results.
Friends while they were at IC, Richard and Paul recently got reacquainted via Facebook. In addition to Facebook Advertising, they coauthored Facebook Marketing for Dummies (Wiley, 2009). Paul is the chief marketing officer of Networked Insights, a company specializing in social media analytics. Richard is founder and CEO of AboutFace Digital, a social media marketing agency that focuses on Facebook promotions, and he is also cofounder of Samepoint, LLC, a social media analytics company.
The Lying Brain: Lie Detection in Science and Science Fiction

Melissa describes The Lying Brain as a cultural history of the methods and devices involved with deception detection. Her book explores a large array of lie detection technologies in depth, exploring everything from the ideological assumptions made about lie detectors to the way they were marketed. She also examines the skills needed to interpret the technology.
Melissa is an assistant professor of English, kinesiology, and community health at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
