International Photography Contest

Each fall, IC's Office of International Programs holds an international photo contest as part of International Education Week. The photos are displayed on campus, and winners are chosen in a popular vote. Winners were chosen in three categories: people, places, and sports.

  • Two elderly couples share a bench to watch the festivites in Certaldo, Italy.
  • A woman washes her face with the waters of the Ganges while people in the background wash clothes.
  • A small wave washes over a swimmer at Manly Beach in Sydney, Australia.
  • Small watercraft line a canal that runs through a section of vibrantly colored houses in Burano, Italy.
  • A woman sits alone in the vast plaza outside the Taj Mahal, watching as the sun sinks toward the distant horizon.
  • A fench encloses a sun-lit field with Howth Castle in the background.
  • A trio of rowers outlined by the sun rising over the Swiss Alps on a misty Lake Geneva.
  • A matador approaches a bull, giving the beast a wide berth, in the bull ring in Seville, Spain.
  • Children play soccer on a grassy field in Cape Town, South Africa.
  • A basketball lay unused as players in the background moveabout the floor.

First Place: Sunday Matinee

By Matt Prokosch '13

Matt took this photo in Certaldo, Italy, a small city in Tuscany. He and his friends were told to spend a day in Certaldo (a short train ride from Siena) because it is beautiful and not overrun by tourists. “Think of the most cliché picture of a hilltop Tuscan town you can think of, and Certaldo is just that,” he says. “We were very lucky when we visited that day as there was a wine festival and all of the town's inhabitants were hanging out on the street to take part in the festivities."

Second Place: Sunrise Bath in the Ganges

By Kathryn Krick '13

During spring semester 2012, Kathryn Krick took part in the Semester at Sea, a program where students take classes on a ship while visiting 13 different ports in 11 countries around the world.

Third Place: Manly Beach

By Gretchen Harvey '13

Gretchen Harvey took this photo at Manly Beach, a popular seaside destination in Sydney, while studying in Australia during the spring of 2012.

First Place: Streets of Burano

By Emily Lash '14

Emily took this photo in Burano, Italy, an island off of Venice that is known for making beautiful lace and glass. She was studying abroad last spring in Florence, Italy, and studied at Lorenzo de’ Medici, the Italian International Institute. She went to Venice for a weekend trip and ventured to this island for the afternoon.

Second Place (tie) Sunset at the Taj Mahal

By Makenzie Dearborn '14

Makenzie Dearborn was studying in an ecovillage in a town called Auroville in Tamil Nadu, India, by the Bay of Bengal. She took this photo at the Taj Mahal in Agra, India.

Second Place (tie) Howth, Ireland

By Conor Harrington '13

Conor took this photo in Howth, Ireland, a coastal town 25 minutes outside of Dublin. “We were walking around searching for Howth Castle, and after finding it we walked through the woods to find that fenced off field,” says Harrington, who was in Ireland studying peace and conflict.

Third Place: Morning Crew Practice

By Matt Prokosch '13

This was taken at sunrise by Matt in Lausanne, Switzerland, which is located on Lake Geneva. He was there visiting a friend, whose family let him stay at their home on top of a mountain in the Swiss Alps.

First Place: Un matador de toros

By Kelsey Anderson '13

Kelsey took this photo at the Plaza de Toros de la Real Maestranza in Seville, Spain. She says this bull ring is one of the most prestigious in the world and the oldest in Spain.
“This fight was during the week-long festival, Feria, when the best fights occur in this ring,” she says. “Although this was the only fight I went to, I really enjoyed learning about bullfights while I studied abroad in Seville. It is something that is generally looked down upon by outsiders, but is a very important part of Seville's culture.”

Second Place: Township Football

By Michelle Boule '13

Michelle studied abroad in Cape Town, South Africa, in spring 2012. This photo was taken at her volunteer site in Manenberg, a township of Cape Town. She volunteered for the semester with an organization called Shawco and taught English to fourth and fifth graders. This photo was taken on their community day, which is a day of games, face painting, and fun.

Third Place: Alone

By Ahn Pham '16

Ahn is an international student from Vietnam. He took this photo during a high school basketball practice in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam.
