Submission Guidelines

Entries will be accepted from February 15, 2008, through June 30, 2008 ONLY. To be eligible, you must be an alumnus or alumna, student, or current or retired employee of Ithaca College, or a member in good standing of the Friends of Ithaca College.

Judges are members of the College community invited by ICView editor Maura Stephens; these judges are ineligible to enter the contest in the genre they are judging but otherwise invited to enter their own works.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All works must be previously unpublished; no exceptions (simultaneous submissions are discouraged but will be permitted as long as you tell us when you send us your work that it is under consideration elsewhere or you intend to submit it elsewhere). Some work may be excluded because of printing limitations.

Each submitter may send in a maximum of three works in all genres free of charge. (So, one person can send in three of one genre; or one poem, one photograph, and one essay; or similar combination.)  Fill out a separate form for each submission if submitting online.

Should you wish to submit more than three works, please send all your submissions via mail along with a judging fee of $25 for each piece beyond the initial three submissions to ICView, Ithaca College, 231 Alumni Hall, Ithaca, NY 14850.

Cartoon/comic strip: One-panel cartoon or comic in frames that are readable to middle-aged judges at six inches wide without magnifying glasses. Must stand alone with no more than a short caption. Include on a separate cover sheet the name, class year (if alumna or alumnus) and/or relationship to Ithaca College, address, phone number, and e-mail address of the artist(s), as well as a title or caption if needed and description of the work as appropriate. Each artist may submit a maximum of three works total without fee. (See instructions above if submitting more than three works.)

Fine Art: Painting, watercolor, sketch, sculpture, or mixed-media, any subject; must be reproducible in magazine format (black & white or color) and be publishable for a general audience (no nudes, please, and please don’t make us disqualify your work because a general audience might find it too controversial. We’re not and don’t want to be BAM). Each artist may submit a maximum of three works total without fee. (See instructions above if submitting more than three works.)

Send reproductions of your work via e-mail or CD to icview@ithaca.edu. We will also accept transparencies or slides, but each requires a scanning fee of $10 (check only, no credit cards); submit transparencies and slides via postal mail to the address at bottom.

With every submission, include on a separate cover sheet the name, class year (if alumnus or alumna) and/or relationship to Ithaca College, address, phone number, and e-mail address of the artist, as well as a title and description of the work (e.g., “Textor Hall, 2006,” charcoal and pastel with gravel and silk on canvas; or “Untitled,” 2008, sculpture, granite and wood).

Photography: Black & white or color, any subject; must be reproducible in magazine format and be publishable for a general audience (no nudes, please, and please don’t make us disqualify your work because a general audience might find it too controversial. We’re not and don’t want to be a funky SoHo artspace). Each artist may submit a maximum of three works total without fee. (See instructions at top if submitting more than three works.)

Submit your work electronically in high-resolution (300 dpi or better at 7 inches wide) .tif files ONLY to icview@ithaca.edu.

With every submission, include on a separate cover sheet the name, class year (if alumnus or alumna) and/or relationship to Ithaca College, address, phone number, and e-mail address of the photographer, as well as a title and description of the work.

Essay: Humorous, personal, or opinion/commentary, any subject that’s appropriate for a general-audience periodical; 450 words maximum.

With every submission, include on a separate cover sheet the name, address, phone number, and e-mail address of the writer, as well as a title and description of the work (e.g., “How I Spent My Winter Vacation”). Each writer may submit a maximum of three works total without fee. (See instructions at top if submitting more than three works.)

Short-Short Fiction: This is a real workout for creative short-fiction writers: Make us laugh, cry, run screaming, or sing like angels in 450 words or fewer. Hint: We could really use a laugh or two.

With every submission, include on a separate cover sheet the name, class year (if alumnus or alumna) and/or relationship to Ithaca College, address, phone number, and e-mail address of the writer, as well as title of the work.

Poetry: Individual poems, 40 lines or fewer. With every submission, include on a separate cover sheet the name, class year (if alumnus or alumna) and/or relationship to Ithaca College, address, phone number, and e-mail address of the poet, as well as title of the work. Each poet may submit a maximum of three 40-line-or-fewer works without fee. (See instructions at top if submitting more than three works.)

To be considered, entrants must follow the guidelines above. Submissions that do not adhere to the guidelines will automatically be disqualified.
