Magic StartupBus

An IC prof spends 72 hours on the StartupBus and lives to tell the tale.

It’s 6 a.m. on a Tuesday in early March, and Adam Peruta, assistant professor of strategic communication, is in Washington, D.C., boarding a bus to Austin, Texas. By the time he reaches his destination, he will have launched a business.

At least that’s the idea behind the StartupBus, an annual competition that pits teams from across the country against each other in a tech business showdown. This year there were 11 buses with 20 or more people on each, all pitching their own startup idea. At the final destination, the South by Southwest tech conference, the teams presented their ideas and a winner is chosen.

Peruta chronicled his experience for ICView below.

While the Rate My Class website is still under development, Peruta plans to apply some of his StartupBus experiences to his classes this fall.

“I definitely want to include more of an entrepreneurial spin on some of my projects and assignments where possible,” he says.

He also hopes to replicate the StartupBus experience for current students.

Editor’s Note: Peruta will compete in the Ultraman World Championships for the fourth time this November.
