Keeping the Torch Burning

For the fifth straight Olympics, students from Ithaca College served essential behind-the-scenes roles at the world’s biggest athletic event. NBC selected 34 interns from the college’s Roy H. Park School of Communications to support the network’s coverage of the XXII Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.

Twenty-five of the students served their intern assignments in or around Sochi. The remaining nine were based at the NBC Sports broadcast and production facility in Stamford, Connecticut. Intern duties ranged from overseeing specific events to working in the Highlights Factory, through which the network developed, packaged, and distributed coverage through multiple media platforms.

“The energy and the magnitude of every moment is unmatched by anything else in the world,” said Jeffrey Dirdack ’15, a television-radio major who worked in the International Broadcast Center. “I’ll never forget my time in Sochi.”

Ithaca College students have previously interned at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, and 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino.
