I Walked Uphill to School — Both Ways

Frank Racioppo ’64 sent in this photo of himself and his friends walking up Buffalo Street as freshmen. The photo appeared in the Ithaca Journal in 1960. The caption has a quote from one of the students that reads: “I’ve heard of hills before, but this is ridiculous.” He told us about that day.

“We had just gotten our class assignments and textbooks. We were even wearing our freshman beanies! We were walking back to our dorms at Quarry and Valentines... the old hospital wards.”

Frank would go on to become freshman class president in the same month John F. Kennedy was elected. During Frank’s senior year, Kennedy was assassinated, the Beatles came to America, and the first Ford Mustang came on the market.

Frank is a cochair of the 50th reunion committee and will be celebrating his 50th reunion at Alumni Weekend, October 10-12. The class even has its own Facebook group.
