Honorable Mention Photography: "Wild Sierra Iris"

by John O'Neill '55

I have, for many years, been an avid wildflower photographer. This image was captured along one of America's favorite wildflower hikes that originates at the 8,000 foot level in California’s Sierra Nevada. The trail between Carson Pass and Winnemucca Lake is a veritable paradise of color in mid- to late July and attracts aficionados from far and wide. My technique is to isolate a blossom from its surroundings by using a large lens opening and fast shutter speed, producing a sharp central image with a soft and complementary background. I also, unashamedly, make use of Photoshop!
