On Saturday, April 26, the Ithaca College Wind Ensemble will perform three works inspired by classical compositions. Entitled "Borrowed Classics," the free concert will begin at 8:15 p.m. in Ford Hall in the James J. Whalen Center for Music. Stephen Peterson will conduct the ensemble.
The program will feature Mozart's Concerto for Clarinet, with faculty clarinetist Richard Faria performing as the soloist. The orchestral accompaniment for the piece has been transcribed for wind instruments. Also on the bill are Timothy Mahr's Fantasia in G, which takes its theme from the opening line of Schiller's Ode to Joy, and a transcription of the orchestral suite from Stravinsky's Firebird.
A seasoned and versatile performer, Faria has played with the Aspen Music Festival, the Syracuse Symphony, and the Manhattan Chamber Orchestra. He has given solo performances with the Guild Trio, the Ariadne String Quartet, and the Atlantic String Quartet.
Peterson has been the director of bands at the College since 1998. In addition to conducting the wind ensemble, he teaches courses in conducting and wind literature. He came to Ithaca from Northwestern University, where he served as the associate director of bands and conductor of the renowned Northshore Concert Band.
