Ithacan Students Win Awards

This semester the Ithacan and its staff were notified about a number of honors, presented for calendar year 2002 (spring 2002 editor in chief, Kylie Yerka '02; fall 2002 editor in chief, Ellen R. Stapleton '03).
THE ITHACAN
- Best College Weekly Newspaper in New York State for 2002 from the New York Press Association. The Ithacan has been named best weekly in the state by the NYPA for three out of the last four years.
- First place for editorial writing in New York State for 2002 from the New York Press Association.
- Second place for editorial writing from the Society of Professional Journalists (northeast region) for 2002 for editorials written by editor in chief Ellen R. Stapleton '03.
- Second place for design in New York State for 2002 from the New York Press Association.
- Third place for best website in New York State from 2002 by the New York Press Association.
Earlier in the year, the Ithacan was named a finalist for the Pacemaker Award by the Associated Collegiate Press/College Media Advisers for issues produced during the 2001-02 academic year.
The paper also received gold medalist certificates for the fall 2001 and spring 2002 semesters from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association in its annual college newspaper critique for 2002. The gold medal certificate is the highest rating.
INDIVIDUAL STUDENT AWARDS
- Kylie Yerka '02 and Ellen R. Stapleton '03, "Leader of the Student Press in North America" awards from the National Scholastic Press Association/Associated Collegiate Press in February. These newly created awards recognize outstanding leadership among student journalists.
- Ellen R. Stapleton '03, first place for best news story from the New York Press Association for Facing the Struggle of Depression.
- Kelli B. Grant '04, first place for newspaper in-depth reporting from the Society of Professional Journalists (northeast region) and second place for best news story from the New York Press Association for A Dangerous Obsession, a multi-part story on eating disorders. The story will now go on to compete against winners in the SPJ's 11 other regions for a national award.
- Kelli B. Grant'04, second place for newspaper general news reporting from the Society of Professional Journalists (northeast region) for Racial Attack Stuns Campus.
- Kelli B. Grant '04, second place for best feature story from the New York Press Association for A Journey from Ithaca to Eire.
- Emily Paulsen '05, first place for newspaper spot news reporting from the Society of Professional Journalists (northeast region) for Party Dismissed from SGA Race. The story will now go on to compete against winners in the SPJ's 11 other regions for a national award.
- Emily Brown '05, third place for best feature story from the New York Press Association for Copyright Crackdown.
- David Donovan '04, first place for column writing from the New York Press Association for Title IX Laws Hinder Equal Opportunity.
- Rebecca Gardner '05, first place for photography from the New York Press Association for Unlocked.
The New York Press Association awards were presented at the NYPA's spring convention in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., on April 12. The Society of Professional Journalists Northeast Region awards were presented at their convention in Port Jefferson, N.Y., also on April 12.
