Deans Announce Plans for Retirement

The deans for the Roy H. Park School of Communications and the School of Business have announced their plans to retire.

Thomas Bohn has been dean of the Park School for 23 years, leading the school through a significant period of growth and overseeing the planning and building of the current facility, which was hailed as "state of the art" at its opening. Among his other major accomplishments, Dean Bohn provided the leadership that led to the development of innovative curricular programs, a dramatic increase in the academic profile of Park School students, and renewed faculty visibility and accomplishment. His work in fund raising and the establishment of the Pendleton Center in Los Angeles have contributed to the Park School becoming one of the top communication schools in the country. Dean Bohn will spend the 2003-4 and 2004-5 academic years helping to develop off-campus programs in the Office of the Provost and working with the Office of Institutional Advancement.

Robert Ullrich took over as dean of the School of Business in 1998, following a period of nationwide decline in business school enrollments. As dean, he increased enrollment from a little over 400 students when he arrived on campus to about 650 currently. At the same time, the average SATs of incoming students improved significantly. Dean Ullrich, who will step down at the end of the next academic year, also oversaw the development of the MBA program and preparations for AACSB accreditation, the review for which will occur in Spring 2004.

During 2003-04, Garry L. Brodhead, associate provost, will serve as interim dean of the Park School of Communications. Searches to fill both deans' positions will begin this fall.

Dean Bohn and Dean Ullrich have provided outstanding leadership at a critical time in the College's growth and we are grateful for their dedication to advancing the College's mission and their commitment to excellence.
