The president, provost, and board of trustees cordially invite the Ithaca College community to join them Monday morning, August 25, at Convocation to celebrate the beginning of a new academic year.
That celebration will continue into the afternoon with the annual IC Community Picnic, beginning immediately after Convocation.
A long-standing tradition at the College, Convocation brings together faculty and staff to welcome new students and to set the keynote for their education at Ithaca. This year's event also will feature the awarding of an honorary degree to a world-renowned architect.
The ceremony opens at 11:00 a.m. with a procession of faculty, trustees, and administrators in academic regalia and features music by faculty ensembles. There will be remarks by Peter W. Bardaglio, provost and vice president for academic affairs; William L. Haines, chairman of the Ithaca College Board of Trustees; and Julie A. Zeldin ’04, president of the Student Government Association. Peggy R. Williams, president of the College, will deliver the annual Convocation address to the campus community.
A special honorary degree will be conferred on Kenzo Tange, the famed architect whose design principles join technology and humanity, as Tange describes it. His life's work also reflects an enhancing of education through a focus on international, intercultural, and interdisciplinary learning, principles reflected in the College's Institutional Plan.
Also being recognized Monday are three Ithaca College professors: Anthony DiRenzo, receiving the Excellence in Teaching Award; Bruce Smith, receiving the Excellence in Scholarship Award; and Kent Scriber, receiving the Excellence in Service Award.
Convocation will be in the Ben Light Gymnasium. We ask that people be seated by 10:45 a.m.
IC Community Picnic
Along with Convocation, we are pleased to continue our tradition this year of welcoming our new students to Ithaca College at our community picnic. The picnic will follow Convocation, at approximately noon, and take place on the Academic Quad. In the event of rain, it will be held in the Terrace Dining Hall.
The IC Community Picnic is an opportunity for our new students to meet other members of the Ithaca College community. In an effort to welcome students to campus, faculty and staff are encouraged to personally greet as many new students as possible. In addition to learning a little bit about students on an individual level, this is also a great time for you to talk a little bit about yourself -- what you do at the College, how long you have been an employee, and what personal interests you may have. Students also appreciate any advice or suggestions you can offer them.
Supervisors are encouraged to make this opportunity available to all staff members.
