The Office of Multicultural Affairs Center for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) Education, Outreach, and Services will present "Out of the Closet and onto the Screen: Intersections of Sexuality and Culture in Film," a yearlong film series.
The series will present films about LGBT people from various cultures and identities. The films will be shown during months in which those identities are nationally recognized.
It will begin on Tuesday, September 23, with a showing of De Colores: Lesbian and Gay Latinos--Stories of Strength, Family, and Love. A bilingual documentary about how Latino families are replacing the deep roots of homophobia with the even deeper roots of love and tolerance, the film will be shown at 7:00 p.m. in Textor 103.
In October, which is recognized as Disability Awareness Month, Double the Trouble, Twice the Fun will be screened. The presentation will take place on Wednesday, October 22, at 7:00 p.m. in Textor 103. This film examines the lives of gay and lesbian disabled people.
In connection with Native American Month, Two-Spirit People will be shown on Monday, November 3, at 7:00 p.m. in Textor 103. By exploring historical and contemporary Native American concepts of gender, sexuality, and sexual orientation, the film reveals the ways in which some Native American cultures allowed for, and in many cases honored, gender and sexual differences.
"Out of the Closet and onto the Screen" will continue in the spring 2004 semester with showings of Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin (February -- Black History Month), Hand on the Pulse (March -- Women's History Month), and Sambal Belacan and Fated to Be Queer (April -- Asian Pacific American Heritage Month).
