Commemorating the 50th anniversary of Sergei Prokofiev's death, pianist Charis Dimaras, flutist Wendy Mehne, and violinist Susan Waterbury will present a free program of his sonatas on Thursday, October 2, at 7:00 p.m. in the Hockett Family Recital Hall.
Dimaras notes that in studying Prokofiev's music, "one begins to see the larger picture of an art that ingeniously exposes and then directly engages every true human emotion, after having previously stripped it clear of all unnecessary sentimentality. An art in which lack of compromise coexists with reconciliation and cold irony seems deeply feeling."
Charis Dimaras is an assistant professor of piano and coordinator of collaborative studies at Ithaca College. He has frequently performed as soloist with orchestras, as well as in solo and chamber music concerts, throughout Greece, Turkey, Italy, Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, England, Scotland, and the United States.
Susan Waterbury teaches violin and chamber music and performs with the resident Ariadne String Quartet. A frequent chamber music collaborator and recitalist, she has performed with the Contemporary Chamber Players (Memphis), Ensemble X (Ithaca), and Present Music (Milwaukee)
Wendy Herbener Mehne is professor of flute at Ithaca College, where she performs with the Ithaca Wind Quintet and was a 1995-96 Dana Teaching Fellow. She is also a member of the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra and a founding member of the new music group, Ensemble X.
