"The Yiddish Traveler in China: Bridges Across Cultures" will be the topic of a lecture by Professor Irene Eber of Hebrew University, Jerusalem, on Monday evening, October 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the Klingenstein Lounge, Egbert Hall.
Eber will discuss poetry, essays, and travel accounts about China by Yiddish writers from Europe -- some who visited China as travelers and others who lived in Shanghai as refugees during World War II. Currently at Cornell doing research on this Yiddish literature and its historical context, Eber is professor of East Asian history at Hebrew University and the author or editor of seven books and many articles on Chinese and Jewish history, literature, and culture. Her Monday lecture is sponsored by the Ithaca College Jewish Studies Program and the Center for the Study of Culture, Race and Ethnicity, as part of the ongoing "Yiddishkayt" series initiated by IC Hillel. Admission is free and refreshments will be served.
