As of this semester, fall 2003, the art department is offering a B.A. degree program in art education.

This new program is for students who wish to become certified teachers of art education grades K-12. The program meets the requirements to apply for a New York State teaching certification upon completion.

The new B.A. degree expands the existing degree programs available from the art department -- B.A in art (art generalist) and B.F.A. in art (professional degree). The intention was to broaden the employment opportunities of our graduates in art.

The art education degree incorporates education courses developed by the Center for Teacher Education along with studio art and art history. The program is designed with the incoming freshman in mind but can be accomplished by a student transferring in from another program early on in the undergraduate career.

The art education program begins with a foundation of studio art courses, complemented by core education requirements. This is followed by electives in studio art and art history and culminates in the senior year with a professional semester of student teaching for 15 weeks at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.

Additional information may be seen in the undergraduate catalog in the Art section (page 109 in the printed catalog), or by contacting Assistant Professor Susan Barbehenn, 274-3026.
