Ithaca Brass to Offer Mix of Music

The Ithaca Brass brings "some things tried and true" and "some things new" to Ithaca College on Monday, November 3. The free concert will begin at 8:15 p.m. in Ford Hall in the Whalen Center.

After opening with a popular brass quintet work by contemporary composer John Cheetham, the group will play a transcription of a work by the 16th- and 17th-century composer Samuel Scheidt and a traditional piece called Swing Wheel, based on Swing Low, Sweet Chariot. The group will split for a trumpet duo and a trio for horn, trombone, and tuba before rounding out the program with Karl Jenkins's Eternal Knot.

Composed of faculty members from the School of Music, the Ithaca Brass features trumpeters Kim Dunnick and Frank Campos, French horn player Alex Shuhan, trombonist Harold Reynolds, and tuba player David Unland.

Established in 1966, the group has performed at regional, state, and national conferences of educators and professional music organizations throughout the United States. The ensemble has also given hundreds of performances at schools and colleges as well as for community concert series in the Northeast.

Ithaca Brass has commissioned several works, including compositions from Chuck Mangione and Malcolm Lewis. Each member of the quintet is an accomplished performer and teacher who is conversant in virtually every musical language, from classical to jazz.
