Ithaca College Theatre will present Shakespeare's Pericles December 4-7, with a preview performance on Tuesday December 2.
The curtain time is 8:00 p.m., with additional matinees on Saturday, December 6, and Sunday, December 7. All performances will take place in the Clark Theatre in the Dillingham Center at Ithaca College.
Although true to the Elizabethan text, the story's adventures unfold as we might follow them today on television. The audience sees the events of Pericles' life as reported by a live news crew instead of a traditional Shakespearean narrator. Set not only in the modern age but amongst a variety of cultures, Pericles searches for the reasons fate has dealt him misfortunes and loss. Director Norm Johnson subtly incorporates the theme of hope in this fairy tale for adults by naming Pericles' ship "Esperanza," or "Hope," after the Greenpeace flagship.
Norm Johnson has been a member of the department of theater arts at IC for 13 years. He is an associate professor of acting and movement in the BFA training program. Most recently he designed masks and was movement coach for David Feldshuh's production of Antigone at Cornell. Last season at IC he directed the world premiere of Kenny Berkowitz's new play November Girls. He has also been associated with the Kitchen Theatre since its inception. He served as artistic director from 1994 to 1997 and has directed over 15 productions there, including last season's critical hit, A Perfect Ganesh.
Cast members for Pericles include Eddie Cooper '04 as Pericles, Emily Torres '04 as Marina, Justin Packard '04 as Cleon, Shelley Smith '04 as Cerimon, and a supporting cast of many others in a variety of roles.
The creative team includes scenic designer Johanna Morris '04, costume designer and associate professor Greg Robbins, lighting designer Claire Mokrauer-Madden '04, sound designer Will Klotz '04, and choreographer Gaelyn Walker '04.
Tickets can be purchased at the ticket office in Dillingham, the Ticket Center located in the Clinton House (273-4497), and Cornell University's Willard Straight Hall. Prices range from $4.50 to $10.00. The Dillingham ticket office is open Monday through Friday, noon to 5:00 p.m., beginning November 17 but will be closed the week of the Thanksgiving holiday.
