Parting the Waters established Taylor Branch as a national authority on America's civil rights movement. Subtitled "America in the King Years, 1954-63," the book won several major awards including the Pulitzer Prize for history. The second book in the series, Pillar of Fire, which covers the years 1963-65, also received critical acclaim. A MacArthur Foundation Fellowship recipient, Taylor Branch received from President Bill Clinton the National Humanities Medal.
