Pulitizer Prize Winner Taylor Branch to Speak

Pulitzer Prize-winning author and historian Taylor Branch will be on campus Monday, January 19, 2004, as part of the ongoing Engaging Democracy and Troubling the Water Lecture Series.

His public presentation titled, "Violence, Race, Democracy: What Rules America?" will take place at 7:00 p.m. in the Emerson Suites.

Parting the Waters established Taylor Branch as a national authority on America's civil rights movement. Subtitled "America in the King Years, 1954-63," the book won several major awards including the Pulitzer Prize for history. The second book in the series, Pillar of Fire, which covers the years 1963-65, also received critical acclaim. A MacArthur Foundation Fellowship recipient, Taylor Branch received from President Bill Clinton the National Humanities Medal.

This presentation is held in conjunction with the College's observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The event is free and open to the public. Please join us for what promises to be an interesting and informative experience.
