The New York-Penn Region of the American Red Cross distributes nearly 2,000 units of blood every day to a total of 127 area hospitals, due in part to greatly increased medical advances. This is good news for all of us -- unless, of course, there isn't enough blood available to take advantage of these life-saving new treatments.

This is why I am appealing to you to contact Susannah Maxwell at 274-7342 or e-mail smaxwell@ithaca.edu to set up a time to donate blood. As someone who has donated blood before, you probably know that just one donation can help save as many as three lives.

Start the New Year off on the right foot; donate blood at our blood drive on Tuesday, February 10, in Emerson Suites from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

You are eligible to donate if you meet the following criteria:

a. Are at least 17 years old
b. Weight at least 110 pounds
c. Have not donated within the last 56 days
d. Have not traveled abroad since 1980 for more then three cumulative months in Great Britain or six months cumulative in Europe.
e. Your last donation was on or before December 16, 2003.
On behalf of hospital patients in the Southern Tier, thank you in advance for your goodwill and generosity.

TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL DONATION
  • Remember that POSITIVE ID is required
  • Be sure to eat well the day of donation
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Get a good night's sleep!
