Philosopher Martha Nussbaum to Discuss 'Compassion and Terror'

Martha Nussbaum, the Ernst Freud Distinguished Service Professor of Law and Ethics at the University of Chicago, will visit Ithaca College on Friday, February 27, to give a free public lecture on "Compassion and Terror." A discussion on the public role of sympathy in the wake of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, Nussbaum's talk will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Park Hall Auditorium.

The event is part of the College's yearlong lecture and film series, "Engaging Democracy and Troubling the Water."

Time magazine recently named Nussbaum as one of seven 21st-century thinkers who are coming up with "the new ideas that will change the world." She has authored many books, including The Fragility of Goodness: Luck and Ethics in Greek Tragedy and Philosophy, Cultivating Humanity: A Classical Defense of Reform in Liberal Education, Sex & Social Justice, Women and Human Development, and Upheavals of Thought: The Intelligence of Emotions.
