The Ithacan had its status as one of the top student newspapers in the country reaffirmed last week at the National College Media Convention in New York City.
The IC student paper was presented with both a Silver Crown from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association and an Apple Award for best in show from College Media Advisers.
The CSPA presents gold and silver crown awards each spring to honor the best in collegiate journalism. Out of 507 newspaper entries nationwide, the Ithacan was one of only 18 schools to win a crown award this year. The paper last won a Silver Crown in 2001, and was the only weekly newspaper to win a Gold Crown in 1997.
The Apple Award, created in 2002, is a best-in-show competition in which each school attending the conference submits a single issue of its paper for judging. The Ithacan won the award in 2002 and again this year.
In addition to these overall honors, Ithacan editor in chief Joe Geraghty '04 was awarded first place in the feature writing/personal experience category in CSPA's Gold Circle Award competition for his story, "Russian Hospitality," which appeared in the August 28, 2003, issue of the paper. Emily Paulsen and Anne K. Walters also received recognition, earning a Certificate of Merit (Honorable Mention) for their story, "Tracked: Student Faces Immigration Struggle," which appeared in the January 30, 2003, issue.
