The Ithacan and ICTV's Newswatch16 have been named best in the Northeast in their respective categories.
The honors were bestowed in this year's Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence competition.
The Ithacan took first place in the best non-daily newspaper category, while Newswatch16 won best non-daily television news broadcast.
"Rarely have we seen a college news operation be able to pull off news/sports/weather so smoothly," the judges said of the ICTV news production. "The anchor teams seemed comfortable with each other. These were very watchable newscasts from beginning to end. The students and faculty should be proud of the work they've accomplished."
The judges had similar praise for the newspaper.
"The Ithacan is an absolutely fabulous paper," they said. "Its layout sets a standard achieved by few commercial papers. Its writing was clear, crisp and well-organized. News stories dealt with serious issues, but weren't stuffy. On the editorial page, the writing is clear and well-reasoned. After reading the Ithacan, I wish I'd gone to Ithaca College."
As Northeast regional winners, both ICTV and the Ithacan go on to compete against the other 11 SPJ regional winners for the national Mark of Excellence award, which will be announced at SPJ's annual convention in New York City in the fall.
The Ithacan has been named best in the Northeast five times in the past seven years, and was named best in the nation in 1999. Newswatch won the Northeast regional award in 2001 and was awarded second place in the region last year. This is the first time both operations have been finalists for the national award in the same year.
In addition, the following Ithaca College students won individual SPJ awards for their work on ICTV and the Ithacan:
Adam Aurand '04 and John Cook '04, second place, television in-depth reporting
