Three concerts held in conjunction with the Ithaca College School of Music Flute Institute -- a five-day workshop focusing on the standard flute repertoire -- will be offered free to the public in late June and early July. All four performances will take place in the Hockett Family Recital Hall in the James J. Whalen Center for Music.
The flute duo of Claudia Anderson and Jill Felber -- known also as Zawa! -- will perform at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 29. They will play their own arrangements of duets and selected solo works. IC faculty flutist Wendy Herbener Mehne and Leone Buyse, a professor of flute and chamber music at Rice University, will join Zawa in performing an arrangement of Barber's Adagio, written originally for strings, and a flute quartet arrangement of Mozart's "Marriage of Figaro" Overture.
At 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 30, Buyse will play Bartok's "Hungarian Peasant Suite" and Cary Bell's Variations for Flute and Clarinet, as well as works by Brahms, Karel Husa, Philippe Gaubert, and Gottfried Rieger. Collaborating with Buyse will be clarinetist Michael Webster and pianist Diane Birr.
At 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 1, the institute students will perform some of the works they have studied in their workshop instruction.
Under the directorship of Herbener Mehne, professor of music performance, the flute institute will offer instruction concentrating on such topics as stage presence, intonation, breathing, and 18th-century ornamentation. In addition to performing, Buyse, Felber, and Anderson will serve as instructors.
