Achieving a Sustainable Planet: The Transition for Strategic Business Managers, September 27, 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. in Emerson Suites A. presented by Professor Ed Stead and Professor Jean Stead of East Tennessee State University

Achieving sustainability will require that business organizations make the transition from strategic environmental management, which focuses on achieving economic, social, and ecological efficiency, to sustainable strategic management which focuses on achieving economic, social, and ecological effectiveness. This transition will require several shifts in the ways organizations think about how they do business. The presenters will examine some of the requisite changes, in how managers view their role and the role of organizations, that must occur for progress to be made toward achieving sustainability. This presentation is based on the research done for their recent book published by M. E. Sharpe entitled Sustainable Strategic Management. Sustainable Strategic Management is their second book. Their earlier book entitled Management for a Small Planet: Strategic Decision Making and the Environment (Sage, 1992 and 1996) received a Choice Outstanding Academic Book Award in 1992, and both editions have been used at dozens of universities in the United States, Europe, and Asia.
