Stephen Hartke, professor of composition at the University of Southern California, will be the focus of two October events at Ithaca College.

Hartke is the School of Music's Karel Husa Visiting Professor of Composition for 2004-5. In addition to the public events, he will provide individual instruction for composition students in the School of Music.

On Sunday, October 10, Hartke will lecture about his music. The talk will begin at 8:15 p.m. in the Iger Lecture Hall in the Whalen Center.

On Monday, October 11, three of Hartke's works will be performed in a free concert beginning at 8:15 p.m. in the Hockett Family Recital Hall in the Whalen Center. Faculty pianist Read Gainsford will play Dreams of Empire. A student ensemble will perform Suite for Summer. Faculty performers Patrice Pastore (soprano), Michael Galván (clarinet), Richard Faria (bass clarinet), and Debra Moree (viola) will play Cancoes Modernistas (Portuguese Songs).

A native of Orange, New Jersey, Hartke grew up in Manhattan in the 1950s and 60s, then settled in California in the 1980s. His music includes influences from medieval and renaissance polyphony to very personal syntheses of diverse elements from nonwestern and popular music.
