In recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month the City Federation of Women's Organizations in collaboration with the Advocacy Center announces a special program, "Strength and Survival: A Spiritual Journey," presented by Lavon Morris-Grant, author of Whom Shall I Fear - A Spiritual Journey of a Battered Woman.
Lavon Morris-Grant will share the powerful story of her own experience with domestic violence. Through it, she offers to other women courage, spiritual comfort, and common sense. Her story reminds us that, although domestic violence can take a terrible toll, women find ways to rebuild their lives and reclaim their dreams. A book signing will follow her talk.
Morris-Grant, a nationally known speaker on abuse topics, serves on the board of the New York State Coalition against Domestic Violence. In 1996 she was shot four times by her husband in front of their three children. Her husband then killed himself. She still has bullets lodged in her body. Her dramatic story will segue to a guided discussion with Heather Campbell, of the Advocacy Center. The Clothesline Project, a collection of t-shirts created by local survivors of abuse, will be displayed -- offering a very human "face" to statistics of violence against women.
Admission is $5; free for IC students and all under 18. Refreshments will be served, door prizes will be given out.
The Women's Community Building is located at 100 West Seneca Street, at the corner of Cayuga Street.
