The Ithaca College Gerontology Institute Fall Workshop Series concludes on Wednesday, November 10, with Doorway Thoughts: Crossing the Threshold to Cultural Competence.
This workshop will be presented by Sharon A. Brangman, MD, division chief, geriatrics at SUNY Upstate Medical University.
Dr. Brangman's interactive workshop will examine the issue of cultural competence in the health care setting. Participants will have the opportunity to explore their own cultural heritage and see how culture and ethnicity shapes our perceptions of health and disease. We will explore the issue of health care disparities in this country, and how culturally competent medical care influences the quality of care patients receive. The recently published book, Doorway Thoughts: Cross-Cultural Health Care for Older Adults will be reviewed, with a focus on developing skills to care for patients of African-American, Mexican, American Indian, and Chinese backgrounds.
Workshops are held in Clark Lounge, Egbert Hall, 1:30-4:30 p.m. Advance registration is requested. Ithaca College faculty, staff, and students may attend free of charge on a space-available basis, but still need to register. For non-IC people the fee is $15, or $10 if retired and over the age of 65.
For further information and a registration form, see Gerontology Institute Workshop Series or call 607-274-1967.
