Ithaca College to Host Symposium on African-Americans in Sport

On Thursday and Friday, January 20-21, 2005, Ithaca College will host a symposium on African Americans in sport entitled "From Jack Johnson to Marion Jones: Gains Made -- Struggles Remain for African Americans in Sport."

Students, faculty, administrators, and guests from the Central New York area will have an opportunity to listen to leading scholars and writers discuss the current state of sport for African Americans within the United States. Below is a list of confirmed speakers at this time:

• Wendy Hilliard, first African American woman to compete on the U.S. women's gymnastics team, former president of the Women's Sports Foundation, currently president of the Wendy Hilliard Foundation (which serves the needs of children in Harlem) and director of Sports for NYC2012, trying to bring the summer Olympic games to New York City.
• C. Keith Harrison, visiting faculty at Arizona State University and scholar in residence with Rush Philanthropic's Hip Hop Summit Action Network; producer of five educational documentaries including The (In)Visible Men: African-American Head Football Coaches
• Othello Harris, associate professor, Miami University of Ohio; coeditor of the Encyclopedia of Ethnicity & Sports in the United States and Impacts of Incarceration on the African-American Family
• Richard Lapchick, director emeritus of the Center for the Study of Sport in Society and DeVos Eminent Scholar, University of Central Florida; a prolific writer, Lapchick has a regular column in Street & Smith's SportsBusinessJournal and the Sporting News. Among his published works is Five Minutes to Midnight, an account of his early years working to achieve racial justice in the United States and in South Africa.
• Leonard Moore, director of African American studies, Louisiana State University. Moore is author of the highly regarded Carl B. Stokes & the Rise of Black Political Power in America and the forthcoming Race, Police and the City: Black Protest in 20th Century New Orleans
• Earl Smith, chair, Department of Sociology, Wake Forest University. His forthcoming book is Race, Sport, and the American Dream.
• Jon Entine, author, columnist and Emmy award-winning television news producer. Entine is author of Taboo: Why Black Athletes Dominate Sports and Why We Are Afraid to Talk about It.
• Tina Sloan-Green, executive director, Black Women in Sport Foundation

This event is sponsored by the Department of Sport Management and Media, Center for Culture, Race, and Ethnicity, Office of Affirmative Action, Office of Student Affairs and Campus Life, Office of Multicultural Affairs, and the School of Health Sciences and Human Performance. Funding for this program has been made possible through the Ithaca College President's New Initiatives Fund. The event is free and open to the public.
