Play Reading at the Handwerker

On Thursday, December 2, the theater group On the Verge will present a reading of Tis Pity She's a Whore in the Handwerker Gallery from 7:00 - 9:00 pm.

Written by John Ford in the early 1630s and directed by Claire Gleitman, the play centers around an incestuous love affair carried on by a brother and a sister, in defiance of the conventions of their society, and its bloody consequences.

The play's themes are tragic, yet it was written in an age when many of the ideals upon which tragedy traditionally was based had come into question. The result is that Ford's play, though it stages horrific events, has the feel at times of a giddy, dark comedy
