Happy New Year, and welcome back to Intercom. With your help, we're looking forward to making this the best year ever for the"faculty and staff information center."

Still in the works -- a "new year's resolution now -- is an upgrade to the software running Intercom. We wanted to inaugurate it by the turn of the year, but decided that the opportunity of this change should be used to make other improvements as well. So -- it won't be long now. In the meantime, let us know what you like about Intercom as well as anything that irritates you. It's your information center and your feedback is very valuable.

Over the past months we have been adding features to serve you better. For example, we added two new topics -- "Among Friends" and "Community Connections." The first is a topic area where you can announce personal accomplishments or milestones -- awards, anniversaries, births, etc. -- as well as other news that you feel is of interest to us all as a community. And, the "Community Connections" topic is for posting announcements, requests, or invitations regarding your involvements in the wider community, such as service projects, fund drives, charity events, and other affairs that you would like your colleagues to know about or join you in.

Most recently, we added to Intercom the "Carpooling" topic. This is a place where you can request or offer rides -- whether on a daily/weekly basis or for the purpose of a single trip. This feature was requested by a lot of people who want to save their cars, money, and the environment by sharing rides. Be sure to check it out -- even if you hadn't thought about carpooling, it might give you some ideas.

All three of these topics are specifically for members of the IC community, so you have to log in -- with your e-mail user name and password -- to read these items. We're hoping that most of you will get the habit of logging in to Intercom every day to see what your fellow community members have posted as well as to post your own news.
