Make this holiday a day on, not a day off!

A community program to celebrate the life of Martin Luther King Jr. will be held on Monday, January 17, from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The keynote speech and performances by local choirs as well as the buffet luncheon are free and open to all.

Shuttle service will be provided for this event running continuously from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm from Textor Hall.

This year the committee is pleased to announce that Cornell's President Jeffrey Lehman, will be providing the keynote speech. The luncheon and guest speaker portion of the program will occur in the second floor gymnasium of the Beverly J. Martin Elementary School, 302 W. Buffalo Street. Workshops follow the luncheon, including children's workshops presented by the Johnson Museum of Art and the History Center.

This year the committee has developed a panel discussion entitled "Do you know who I am?" to challenge all of us to be aware of and embrace diversity and inclusiveness. In addition, Marilyn Ray will present on military recruitment in the high schools, and there will be a special presentation by Ithaca College's MLK Scholars on their recent civil rights tour. The day will conclude with dessert and additional performances by area choirs. Workshops and dessert will be held at the Greater Ithaca Activities Center, 318 N. Albany Street.

The day is organized by the Greater Ithaca Activities Center; the Multicultural Resource Center; the Center for Religion, Ethics, and Social Policy at Cornell; the Cornell Public Service Center; Ithaca College's Center for Student Leadership and Involvement; Campus Life at Cornell University; and Ithaca College's Office of Multicultural Affairs. It is cosponsored by Greenstar Cooperative Market and the City of Ithaca.

Volunteers are needed to assist throughout the day. We especially are looking for people to help with the kids MLK activities area from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm. Contact Deborah Mohlenhoff if you are interested in volunteering for this event.
