The public is invited to attend the final round of the D'Addario Classical Guitar Competition at Ithaca College on Saturday, February 19. Starting at 4:00 p.m. in the Hockett Family Recital Hall of the James J. Whalen Center for Music, the event culminates a daylong series of competitions involving 13 aspiring young musicians from high schools and universities throughout the Northeast who registered for the event.
The competition is open to college and high school students of classical guitar who are no older than 23 years of age as of the day of the competition. Contestants must not be enrolled in a graduate program or hold a graduate degree of any kind. Ithaca College students are ineligible.
The preliminary round will begin at 9:00 a.m. The three to four finalists chosen will compete at 4:00 p.m., with an awards ceremony to follow. The preliminary round will not be open to the public. The D'Addario Foundation will award $1,000 to the winner; the second-place finisher will receive $500. If a high school student is not selected for either of these prizes, the judges may recognize an exceptional high school contestant who demonstrated outstanding ability or potential.
The D'Adddario Classical Guitar Competition is sponsored by the D'Addario Foundation for the Performing Arts, the Ithaca College School of Music, and the Division of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions.
"The D'Addario Foundation has been sponsoring an annual Winter Guitar Festival since 1998," says Townsend Plant, School of Music admission coordinator. "This year, however, we are taking a hiatus as organizers focused on getting this competition up and running. We expect the guitar festival will resume next year, with the competition as a significant component."
