Professor Penny Jolly of Skidmore College will present this year's art history guest lecture, "So Is She Pregnant? Maternity Dress on St. Mary Magdalene in 15th-Century Flemish Art." The talk will be on Monday, March 28, at 5:30 pm in Williams 323.
Jolly is the author of Made in God's Image?: Eve and Adam in the Genesis Mosaics at San Marco, Venice (Berkeley, 1997) and numerous articles treating Jan van Eyck, Rogier Van der Weyden and north-south artistic exchange during the Renaissance. Her recent projects have explored social history and manifestations of material culture in the artistic realm, most notably with her exhibition catalog Hair: Untangling a Social History (Tang Museum of Art, Skidmore College, 2004). Her current work on Renaissance images of pregnancy, birthing, and breastfeeding continues this interest. Jolly is professor of art history and the William Kenan Professor of Liberal Arts at Skidmore College.
