Patricia R. Zimmermann has been selected as one of three nationally recognized speakers at a kickoff event for a recently released new research report on the state of independent media, sponsored by the Rockefeller Foundation and the National Alliance for Media Arts and Culture (NAMAC). The event will be held at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in New York City on June 2.

The report, “Deep Focus: A Report on the Future of Independent Media,” looks at the distinctive features of the new independent media ecology that has emerged in the context of media consolidation, dissemination of media tools, diffusion of distribution systems and technologies, and proliferation of content. The report was spearheaded by the National Association for Media Arts and Culture, the national service organization for media arts, and funded by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the Tides Foundation.

Zimmermann is a professor in the Department of Cinema and Photography and coordinator of the Culture and Communication Program in the Division of Interdisciplinary and International Studies.
