This is part of a worldwide celebration; similar gatherings are being held this weekend in New York City, San Francisco, and dozens of other U.S. cities, as well as in countries including Indonesia, the Philippines, East Timor, Korea, Japan, India, Thailand, New Zealand, Australia, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, the Czech Republic, France, England, and Canada. We will also be celebrating Burmese Women’s Day (June 19) and the Burmese people’s struggle for freedom and democracy.
Please join us to sample traditional Burmese food and music, watch informational videos, and witness a commemorative “House Arrest” staged by several Burmese refugees and former political prisoners in solidarity with Aung San Suu Kyi.
Ithaca’s Acting Mayor Michelle Courtney Berry will introduce our most honored guest, Mr. Bo Hla Tint, Burmese Minister in Exile. We have also invited President Peggy Williams of Ithaca College, New York’s U.S. Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton and Charles Schumer, New York’s U.S. Representative Maurice Hinchey, Governor George Pataki, New York State Assembly Member Barbara Lifton, and President Jeffrey Lehman of Cornell University.
