A September tradition, the annual Founder's Day Concert in the Park will this year feature the Ithaca College Wind Ensemble, conducted by Stephen Peterson. The free open-air concert will take place on Sunday, September 18, at 2:00 p.m. in DeWitt Park in downtown Ithaca. The rain location is Ford Hall in the James J. Whalen Center for Music.
Each piece of music on the program evokes or was inspired by something in the sky, whether it be planets, stars, or the "far, far away" galaxies of science fiction films. Entitled "All Things Celestial," the concert will feature Frank Campos, professor of music performance, as the trumpet soloist in Clarke's "Stars of the Velvety Sky." Also on the program are "Mars" and "Jupiter" from Holst's "The Planets," and "A Star Wars Trilogy" by John Williams, as well as overtures and marches by Suppe, Sousa, and others.
Sponsored by the Friends of Ithaca College, this concert brings music back to the original Ithaca College downtown "campus quad" and celebrates the College's partnership with the community. The Founder's Day Concert in the Park has been held annually since 1992, when it was first produced to mark the centennial of the founding of the Ithaca Conservatory of Music. The concert is made possible through the generous support of Baker Travel and the Boardman House.
The Ithaca College School of Music offers some 300 free concerts each academic year. More information on these performances is available by calling (607) 274-3717 or visiting www.ithaca.edu/concerts.
