On Thursday, September 22 at 7:00 p.m., Janet Schmalfeldt will give a talk on Beethoven's "Bridgetower" Sonata, opus 47. The presentation will take place in the Hockett Family Recital Hall, and violinist Rebecca Ansel will assist.
Professor Schmalfeldt's areas of research expertise include the interaction of analysis and performance, the music of Alban Berg, and aspects of form in tonal music. She is currently working on a book concerning analytical and philosophical perspectives on 19th-century European music. Schmalfeldt has won awards for her teaching and was the president of the Society for Music Theory from 1997 to 1999, and she is an active performer as a collaborative pianist. Presently an associate professor of music at Tufts University, she holds two degrees each from Lawrence University and Yale University.
