Request for Faculty Athletic Fellows

09/28/05

Contributed by Melissa Gattine

The fall semester is underway and our fall student-athletes have been competing for several weeks. All full-time faculty are invited to become Faculty Athletic Fellows. We will meet once a year for a review of NCAA rules and discuss our experiences as fellows. You may become a fellow by contacting Wenmouth Williams, Jr., faculty athletics representative.

Faculty Athletic Fellows agree to do the following:

1. Meet with student-athlete recruits selected by coaches.

2. Be a contact person in academic departments for student-athletes.

3. Be available to talk to student-athletes.

4. Communicate faculty concerns to the athletics department administration.

Membership:

All full-time faculty are eligible for this program. Faculty can send their request to to be a fellow to the faculty athletics representative at any time during the academic year. The FAR will maintain a registry of faculty volunteers. The registry will be distributed to coaches and the athletics department on a regular basis. Coaches and/or administrators will contact faculty directly for requests for assistance or information.

The goal is to enlist at least one faculty representative from every academic department. However, all faculty are eligible for membership.

Reward:

The ultimate reward is working with our student-athletes. Faculty Athletic Fellows will be recognized during one contest of one sport per athletic season.

Limitations:

1. This program is not a substitute for academic advising from department advisors.

2. Serious problems will be forwarded to the faculty athletics representative.
