The Handwerker Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of "Daniel Jackson: Upon Reflection," curated by Cheryl Kramer, on Thursday, October 6.
"Upon Reflection" offers the viewer a glimpse into the intimate, playful world of Daniel Jackson’s still-life paintings. This body of work is characterized by a small selection of objects brought into a unified composition through subtle tonal variations within a virtually monochromatic background. Enhancing the intimacy of the works is their small scale and simple, but monumental, design. The artist subtly captures the effects of light and the textures of objects though his sophisticated handling of paint.
Jackson contends that painting must go beyond merely presenting something beautiful; he uses ambiguity to counter beauty. To him, the real skill is in recognizing the beauty in objects that are normally considered banal and are often disregarded. His influences are diverse and include Dutch, French and Spanish still-life painters like Pieter Claesz (1597–1661), Jean-Siméon Chardin (1699–1779) and Juan Sanchez Cotán (1561–1627), as well as twentieth-century artists Antonio Lopez Garcia (born 1936) and Claudio Bravo (born 1936).
A catalogue accompanies the exhibition and there will also be an artist’s talk in the Gallery at 12:15 p.m. on October 20.
An opening reception will be held on Thursday, October 6, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., and the work will remain on display until November 6.
