Two Ithaca College Public Safety Employees receive Kiwanis ‘Officer of the Month’ award.
Sergeant Ron Hart and Master Patrol Officer Terry O’Pray received the Frank G. Hammer Officer of the Month award October 10, 2005 at Kendal at Ithaca for successfully preventing a student from jumping to his death on campus last month.
Hart and O’Pray were called to a residence hall in September to find a student who was sitting on the top of the third floor balcony railing with his feet hanging over the side in a position to jump. The officers additionally learned that the student had taken an unknown quantity of pills.
“The officers spoke with this young man for over an hour to convince him that this was not a good idea,” said Bob Holt, director of public safety who nominated the officers for the award.
Eventually the officers were able to persuade the student off of the railing allowing them the opportunity to grab hold and gain control. The student was transported to the hospital for treatment.
