Ithaca College Theatre celebrates the 50th anniversary of the founding of its School of Humanities and Sciences with the musical Grease. Set at the fictional Rydell High School, Grease celebrates the innocence of the 1950’s rock’ n’ roll lifestyle.
Grease is the love story of Sandy and Danny, as they make their way through the Burger Palace, the beginnings of the beatnik generation, the drive-ins, massive cars, Brylcreem and milkshakes. With songs like “Greased Lightning” and “Beauty School Dropout,” Grease bursts with rocking vitality and just plain fun. Set in the era that birthed the concept of the “teenager,” Grease depicts a generation’s growing pains with Frenchy’s obsessive change of hair color and the dance contest with the seductive Vince Fontaine and the dangerous Cha-cha.
Despite a chilly reception from critics, Grease was a popular success when it opened off Broadway in 1972 and went on to win nine Tony awards, including Best Musical. It was later adapted to the screen in a popular movie starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton John.
