Iraq and the Ethics of Preventive War

On Wednesday, November 16th, at 7:30 p.m. in Textor Hall 103, Professor Steven Lee, chair of the Department of Philosophy at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, will present a talk entitled "Iraq and the Ethics of Preventive War." In this talk Professor Lee will discuss the differences between just wars and unjust wars, and apply his conclusions to the current war in Iraq. The talk is being sponsored as part of the School of Humanities and Sciences' 50th anniversary celebrations.

Professor Lee is a nationally-recognized expert on the ethics of war and peace. He is the author of numerous influential articles and books, including Morality, Prudence, and Nuclear Weapons (Cambridge, 1996) and Ethics and Weapons of Mass Destruction (Cambridge, 2004).

Professor Lee’s talk is free and open to the public; discussion will follow. Professor Craig Duncan of the Ithaca College Department of Philosophy and Religion will open with some brief remarks about the way in which philosophical thought can enhance our understanding of contemporary issues.
