Dr. Garry Brodhead, associate provost, has announced his retirement from the Office of the Provost effective May 31, 2006.

Garry has had a long and distinguished career at Ithaca College as a member of the School of Music faculty, chair of the Music Theory, History, and Composition Department, and invaluable member of the Academic Affairs team.

He first came to the College in August 1970 as an instructor with a master’s degree in music from Indiana University and was promoted to assistant professor in 1975. He received tenure in 1976 and a year later was appointed chair of the Music Theory, History, and Composition Department. He completed his Ph.D. in music theory from Indiana in 1983. Promotion to associate professor and promotion to full professor followed in 1984 and 1991, respectively. In 1996 he came to the Provost’s Office, where he served as assistant provost and dean of graduate studies until January 2000 and then associate provost and dean of graduate studies until 2003. In spring 2003, he assumed responsibility for the College Library in addition to his duties as associate provost while a search for a new library director was carried out, and in the academic year 2003-04 he served as associate provost and interim dean of the Park School of Communications. He returned to the provost’s office to serve fulltime as associate provost in the summer of 2004.

In recent years Garry has provided outstanding leadership on a number of key projects that have helped to transform the College. These include the Faculty Workload Project, Academic Program Review, the Center for Faculty Research and Development, the James J. Whalen Academic Symposium, and most recently, the Antigua program, the Ithaca Seminar, and the Core Experience and all-college Honors Program initiatives.

Garry’s deep commitment to Ithaca College and academic excellence and innovation has been a source of inspiration to all of us in the Provost’s Office. His departure will be a real loss, but we will continue to build on his exceptional work.

A farewell reception for Garry will be announced at a later date.
