The Department of Anthropology recently announced that Zahida Sherman has been awarded its annual Fitchen Prize for an outstanding undergraduate paper.

Ms. Sherman's essay, based on original research that she conducted in Ghana last year, is entitled: "Remembrance: A Study on How The Upper East Region Villages of Chiana, Paga, Pikworo Slave Camp, Kayoro, Katin and Nakong Remember The Slave Trade." Zahida's project was done during a semester's stay in Ghana under the auspices of the School for International Training. She combined participant-observation and interview techniques in her investigation of how the local historical memory of the slave trade is preserved and enacted in an understudied region of Ghana. She is currently revising the paper for publication.
