The public is invited to attend the final round of the second annual D'Addario Classical Guitar Competition at Ithaca College on Saturday, February 18. Starting at 4:00 p.m. in the Hockett Family Recital Hall of the James J. Whalen Center for Music, the event culminates a daylong competition involving 15 aspiring young musicians from high schools and universities throughout the Northeast.
The competition is open to students of classical guitar who are no older than 23 years of age as of the day of the competition.
Beginning in the morning, the preliminary round will not be open to the public. The three to four finalists chosen will compete in a public recital at 4:00 p.m., with an awards ceremony to follow. The D'Addario Foundation will award $1,000 to the winner; the second-place finisher will receive $500. If a high school student is not selected for either of these prizes, the judges may recognize an exceptional high school contestant who demonstrated outstanding ability or potential.
The D'Addario Classical Guitar Competition is sponsored by the D'Addario Foundation for the Performing Arts and the Ithaca College School of Music.
"The D'Addario Foundation has supported the classical guitar program at Ithaca College since 1998, first with the Winter Guitar Festival and now with the competition, which is in its second year," says Townsend Plant, School of Music admission coordinator and director of the competition. "Last year's competition was a wonderful success, and the level of the players was very high. We are thrilled to be able to present this event once again and provide these young guitarists the opportunity to perform, receive constructive feedback, and be recognized for their outstanding talent."
