The annual James J. Whalen Academic Symposium will be held on Monday, April 3, 2006, in the Ithaca College Campus Center (Emerson Suites, Clark Lounge, Klingenstein Lounge, and North Meeting Room), beginning at 9:00 a.m., and continuing throughout the day.
A program of presentations by students from all five schools of the College and the Division of Interdisciplinary and International Studies will feature work they have accomplished in collaboration with faculty sponsors.
Research projects in anthropology, art history, business, chemistry, cinema and photography, computer science, culture and communication, economics, English, gerontology, health promotion and physical education, history, Jewish studies, legal studies, mathematics, modern languages and literatures, music, physics, politics, psychology, sociology, sport management and media, sustainability, and television and radio as well as original written works and art will be presented. Students from the Martin Luther King Scholars Program will give presentations on their recent trip to the Dominican Republic. Students from the Park Scholars Program will give presentations on the topic “Media Making a Difference.” A special feature of this year’s Symposium will be presentations by students in the January Antigua courses, Documenting Ecosystems through Photography, Sport in the Caribbean: United or Divided, Field Experience: Interdisciplinary Teamwork, and Mobility Training. A Keynote Session from 12:00 – 1:15 p.m. will feature a presentation by Kanika Simpson-Davis, program coordinator in Antigua, and a panel comprised of students who studied in Antigua during the January trip.
The presentations are the result of course work, independent studies and research projects, seminars, and honors projects. Over 150 presentations involving work by more than 200 students will constitute the program.
