For students interested in women in sport, the Department of Sport Management and Media is offering a three credit course in the May Session focusing on this topic.

Through the use of films, readings, and examination of websites, students will have an opportunity to learn more about women’s sport in the United States and internationally. Films to be shown include: the Tracy/Hepburn classic “Pat and Mike”; Rocks With Wings (a documentary about a girls basketball team on a Navajo reservation); Girl Wrestler (a story about a 13 year old female wrestler who challenged for the right to wrestle in school); Vixens (a PBS documentary about women’s professional football); selected clips dealing with women in baseball (did you know there are at least three movies called “A League of Their Own”?); and contemporary movies such as Bend It Like Beckham and Million Dollar Baby. We may see HBO’s Dare to Dream and the newest HBO documentary, “Billie Jean King: Portrait of a Pioneer”. At least one class will be devoted to women's sport in other countries.

Registration can be done using the Homer system. Look for the course under Summer 2006. The course number is SPMM-39901-48; the CRN Number is 10181. The dates for the course are May 8-19, 2006 from 9am until 1pm daily. For a copy of the course description you can contact Dr. Ellen J. Staurowsky in the Department of Sport Management at [mailto:staurows@ithaca.edu].
