I hope you are enjoying your summer and taking time for fun and relaxation. I thank those of you who have agreed to serve as discussion leaders for Life of Pi. I still need volunteers so please encourage your colleagues to sign-up.

Please note on your calendar that the prep session for discussion leaders is scheduled for Tuesday, August 22, from 10:00 a.m. to noon in Textor 102. Barbara Adams (writing), Marina Caillaud (biology), Jason Freitag (history), and David Saiia (business) will offer perspectives on the text that will prove helpful to your own discussions with incoming students on Tuesday, August 29, from 11:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. (note the time).

Andrew Darby, with our reference librarians, has set up a web site for the reading initiative. Please consult www.ithaca.edu/library/fyri to see articles on the text, interviews with the author, and the reader’s guide published by Harcourt, Inc.

This year, the author of the First-Year Reading selection, Yann Martel, will not speak about his book. Dr. Azar Nafisi, author of Reading Lolita in Tehran, will speak (Tuesday, September 5 at 7:00 p.m. in the Emerson Suites) on the transformative power of the literary imagination, a topic in keeping with Life of Pi and with the First-Year Experience theme, Crossing Boundaries.

Do contact me should you have any questions.

Thank you.
