The season opens in October with Etta Jenks by Marlane Gomard Meyer. Set in Hollywood, the story begins with a naive young woman’s arrival in Tinseltown in hopes of fulfilling her dream of stardom. She finds instead a nightmare of disillusionment, pornography, and revenge. Etta Jenks is a fascinating drama of tough-talking characters whose business is erotic fantasy and whose reality is ethical limbo. This play is intended for mature audiences only. Etta Jenks is not included in the season subscription; single tickets will be available for purchase.
Urinetown: The Musical welcomes you to an unusual world where private bathrooms are illegal and everyone must pay a fee to pee. Satire and comedy are the order of the day in this hilarious look at resource management and capitalism taken to the extreme. This Broadway hit mocks every genre—from gospel to opera—producing a tongue-in-cheek masterpiece.
A beloved classic by Anton Chekhov rounds out the first half of the season. The Seagull is set on a beautiful country estate, where love is in the air—along with jealousy and heartbreak. As his characters struggle to find happiness, Chekhov takes a profound look at what we strive for, what we settle for, and what we sacrifice for those we love.
Guest director David Lefkowich (The Consul, The Merry Widow) returns once again to direct the annual collaboration between the School of Music and the Department of Theatre Arts. One of Handel’s most popular operas, Acis and Galatea recalls characters from ancient mythology to tell the story of the young nymph Galatea who is in love with the shepherd Acis. Will their love be enough to save them when a horrible monster comes to wed Galatea?
The drama continues in March with 36 Views, by one of the most exciting young playwrights working in the United States today, Naomi Iizuka. This drama uses the rich textures of traditional Japanese culture, theater, and art to create the backdrop as characters attempt to grasp the nature of beauty and authenticity. When a rare artifact emerges on the scene, art dealers, academics, restorationists, and artists search for its value and in the process alter the course of one another’s lives.
The season closes with a world premiere musical event! Ithaca College Theatre is proud to develop and stage a new musical written by Ithaca College student Brett Boles ’07. Based on the 19th-century Dumas classic of romance, betrayal, and treasure, the story centers around young Edmond, who is thrown in jail for a crime he didn’t commit. Will he succeed in recapturing lost happiness or be consumed by revenge?
