During the 2005-06 academic year, an average of 285 students, 27 faculty and 7 staff members were involved each semester in partnership activities between Ithaca College and Longview, a retirement community located on Danby Road. For a complete listing of the activities for the Fall 2005 and Spring 2006 semesters, you may request copies from Chris Pogorzala or view the lists on the Gerontology Institute’s web site (www.ithaca.edu/aging).
There are many opportunities for members of the Ithaca College Community to become involved at Longview, including:
• Presentations at Longview: There has been an ongoing faculty speaker series at Longview since the beginning of the partnership in Spring 1999. Staff members have also given presentations. Topics can be academic in nature, related to areas of personal interest, or travel experiences. Poetry readings, slide shows and musical and/or theatrical performances are also welcome. An appreciative audience is guaranteed! These monthly presentations generally take place on Thursday evenings from 7-8:00 p.m. in the Longview auditorium, but it is also possible to schedule them on other days/times.
• Course Related Projects at Longview: Faculty members can involve their students at Longview through course related and/or service learning projects. Intergenerational discussion groups, tours of Longview, recreational and social activities planned by students, and student presentations or performances held at Longview are all possibilities. Chris Pogorzala will work with faculty to identify options and to facilitate scheduling, promotion of programs, recruitment of Longview participants, etc.
• Involving Longview Residents in Classes on Campus: Longview residents do take classes on campus: 11 residents are officially auditing courses this fall and several others are informally attending classes. In addition to having residents taking full semester courses, faculty members might consider inviting residents to view films with their classes, or to sit in on selected speakers, student class presentations or performances. This would be especially effective for classes that meet in the morning when the shuttle can provide transportation to campus for the residents.
• Volunteer at Longview: Students, staff and faculty are always welcome to volunteer in any capacity at Longview. This might involve assisting in existing recreation programs, creating new ongoing activities, providing theater or music performances, planning a social event or dance, visiting individual residents, or assisting with yard and garden work.
Longview/Ithaca College Shuttle
On days that classes are in session there is a shuttle that provides transportation between Longview and the College. It runs about every 15 minutes from approximately 8:45 a.m. to 1:00 on MWF, and from 9:00 – 12:20 p.m. on T/Th. This shuttle is available to members of both the Longview and Ithaca College Communities. The shuttle schedule is posted on the Gerontology Institute web site (www.ithaca.edu/aging) and copies are available at the Campus Bookstore and at the Campus Center Information desk. Chris Pogorzala can also provide copies (electronic or paper).
